きっかけ

　学習塾を初めて25年になります。教え方、効率的な記憶の仕方など、学校の勉強ができるようになるためにはどうすればいいのか、たくさん調べ、実践してきました。500個の英単語を1日で覚えるなどというワークショップに参加したことがあります。あれやこれやあって、「とにかくやる」、それ以外は邪道に思えてきました。単語はこうやって覚えるとか、数学はこうやったら伸びるとか、嘘ではないと思うのですが、なんかずれていると感じるようになったのです。結果、「なるべく長い時間付き合う塾」という考えで現在は道場を経営しています。

　どんどん伸びていく人と、現状維持がやっとの人がいますよね。すごい勢いで伸びていく生徒の特徴の一つは、「使命感」のようなものがある場合だと思います。ある卒業生は、「生涯～し続けます。」という言葉を使っていました。そして現在もそのようにし続けているのです。彼がそのようになったきっかけは、読書だといいます。ある本に出会い、それ以降はずっとその方向へ歩き続けているのです。

　これまでは塾という形態でやっていたのですが、「読書のすすめ」という本屋で、数年前素晴らしい本を紹介してもらい、転機が訪れました。

　喜多川康さんの「書斎の鍵」という本です。この本のおかげで、この地域の人たちが、どんな時間でも学びに来ることができる、誰かが何かしらをがんばっているような場所を作りたいと思うようになりました。何度も読んだので、本はかなり傷んできてしまいました。そのうち年に数回、著者の喜多川さんに講演しに来たくなるような場所を作りたい。そして、ここに来た人たちが、楽しい自分らしい人生を歩んでいける、ちょっとしたお手伝いがしたい。そんなことを考えるようになりました。読んだことがない方は、「読書のすすめ」という本屋さんで買って読んで欲しいです。「読書のすすめ」は、私が行ったことのある書店の中で、最高の書店です。店長と会って、店長と話す。そこで起こる化学反応を大切にして、薦めていただいた本を読んでみる。きっと自分が求めていた変化が起こり始めます。きっと本が今より好きになります。おすすめの本屋さんです。
